The New York Jets have signed Josh McCown to a 1-year, $6 Million dollar deal.
Whether Jet fans (like myself) approve or not, McCown will most likely be the commander in chief for gang green in 2017. What's funny about this whole situation is that I saw this coming a long time ago. How you ask?
On September 13th, 2015 a few buddies and I were lucky enough to attend opening day of the NFL season; a 1 o'clock showdown between the New York Jets and the Cleveland Browns (oh it was as good as advertised, trust me). The two gunslingers dueling it out in the Meadowlands were none other than Ryan Fitzpatrick and Josh McCown. Well, Josh dueled it out for about 13 minutes til he dove head first into the end zone and proceeded to get hit by 3 members of the Jets secondary, helicoptering over the goal line and fumbling the ball out of play (see video below). It was at that moment that I knew, he'd one day be a New York Jet.
All joking aside this is probably the smartest move for my beloved New York Jets. They add a veteran bridge quarterback with some highly touted leadership qualities who can help mold Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg into better players on and off the field. However, seeing as how McCown has a lifetime 18-42 record in the NFL, let's hope his presence doesn't rub off too much on the youngsters.
The move makes sense for a team in rebuilding mode so you can't complain, but it does raise one big question about the future of the franchise; will this keep the Jets from selecting a QB in this April's draft? My gut says to avoid one, but recent Bleacher Report posts say the Jets are "very intrigued" at the thought of grabbing Mitchell Trubisky (mama call him Mitchell, imma call him Mitchell) with the 6th overall pick. But do the Jets really want to keep four quarterbacks on the roster again? Based off last years debacle I would think not.
When its all said and done passing on Trubisky or Deshaun Watson would be tough to swallow especially if they show any bit of talent on the pro level, but watching Malik Hooker or Jamal Adams decapitate defenseless receivers coming over the middle would make me all warm and fuzzy inside. So let's just go with either of those choices instead.
The Jets are in dire need of secondary help. Staying safe at pick #6 and grabbing either of the Ohio State DB's or LSU's Jamal Adams would give an immediate boost to a defense recovering from a putrid season. Who knows, maybe our pick #6 could produce more pick sixes! (See what I did there...... I hate my life sorry). I guess we will have to wait til April 27th to see which route they go. Until next time, its your friendly neighborhood Jets Fan (dunce) signing off, take care.
