Commuting Is The Best Thing To Happen To Me

You know the incredible feeling you get late at night when you know you have work or school the next day? That excitement to cut your sleep shorter than it already is going to be and jump out of bed and head to a place that's more fulfilling than your warm home?

Well if you can believe it there's something even better than waking up early to go to work or school and spend hours doing everything your bosses and teachers want. Imagine we pick that office or school right up and put it two hours away. That's right, TWO. It's like like an hour, except twice. Or a minute, 120 times. The best part of any work day is easily the riveting and never inconvenient trip to and from.

When my alarm goes off in the morning it's so so good and not depressing at all. Thankful for another weekday and for all of the bills and responsibilities I have that aren't depressing either, I jet out of bed with a huge smile on my face and enthusiastically begin to get ready.

I don't think I stop smiling for the entire time that I am getting ready. I smile in the shower, I smile brushing my teeth (messy, but hey I can't help it) and smile as I put on the ever comfortable, non-restrictive dress clothes that breathe so well and that I never sweat in.

I float outside with ease and head to my car. On normal days I hop right in but if I'm lucky, my Corolla will be covered in snow or maybe a thin layer of ice hidden at the bottom to take the extra few minutes cleaning juuuuuust needed to put me behind schedule.

Up next is personally my favorite part: The Taconic. They say that ignorance is bliss, and they might be right because pulling up this highway ramp each day not knowing if I'll be going 95 or parked behind every car in Westchester is all the uncertainty I need for the blissful life I lead. Brake lights are the best, and nothing is more exciting than the anxiety that you're gonna miss your train and also your back up train.

Speaking of the train, it's also the best thing ever and not in any way inconvenient. No one really commutes to the city except me and maybe a few others, so there are always seats. So many seats. There's like a surplus of seats. Metro North officials clearly overestimated how many people commute and could probably get rid of some to save money for things the city needs like underground rat breeding. I even get lonely sometimes wishing we'd add one more stop so that people could get on the train and sit next to me. Or maybe even just take all the seats before I sit! I mean I complain when I skip the gym, so what better workout/way to kill two birds with one stone than to stand uncomfortably for 55 minutes?

My train gets in and I power walk, still smiling, from the train to the subway. And I don't know how many of you know this because no one uses public transportation in New York City, but those trains are always on time and never once have had messed up schedules. They're a lot like me, because I am never late for work. Also, for anyone who has intimacy issues these trains give you the best exposure therapy. That's right, if you have trouble getting close to people just take the 6 train at 5pm and you'll get real real close to a bunch of strangers. Maybe not emotionally close, but you'll surely be able to smell what they had for breakfast, or count how many whiteheads they have on their nose.

Anyway after I get all of my not awkward stranger touching in I bound out the sliding doors and make my 12 minutes walk to work, and arrive so energized and ready to start the day that's already been going on for three hours. I spend the day not paying attention to my job because I'm just so excited to do it all over again, and when it's finally over and I'm home for the night I hop right in bed excited to do the same thing all over again.

I could go on for days because I have such a passionate love for this entire aspect of my life but to wrap it up: commuting is just the best. It's also not even expensive if you don't count the money you spend buying tickets and gas. I wrote this piece because I really hope one day all of you get to experience this rush too. In fact, everyone should commute and come join me on the train in the mornings as there are plenty of seats to go around. I'll be there waiting for you, and yes, still smiling.
