Tom Brady's statement: What it could mean for Jimmy Garoppolo

As the resident Patriots fan in a sea full of New York Jets fans, I felt that it was only right for me to take the reigns on the fact that the certifiable GOAT could potentially be under center for the next 6-7 years.

While the 31 other teams in the NFL harmonized to a large groan, the fan base of the New England faithful came to yet another cross-road as the embarrassment of the riches that is the Patriots only seemed to grow. With this announcement, we have to explore what this could mean for Jimmy G.

The question on Garoppolo has on that has "plagued" the Patriots and the rest of the NFL for about a year and will continue to do so until he is either, traded, resigned, or franchised tag next year (which only delays the previous options). The obvious conclusion is that either Jimmy is going to either ask for a ridiculous amount of money to be the Alex Moran of the Patriots or will walk, because he wants to pursue his own path and be a clear starter for another organization.

With Tom stating this insane timeline that he has 6 or 7 National Freaking Football League years in the tank is insane, but the man has so much drive, that insanity is the norm for him. The highly popularized and covered chip on the shoulder of Mr. Brady has now just gotten bigger, can he silence doubters and put in even 5 years of quality football, that remains to be seen. But hearing this, and the way that Brady trains and treats his body, and seemingly doesn't get touched in the pocket because of this quick release, has to make Garoppolo metaphorically sick to his stomach. Channeling his inner Brucie from "The Longest Yard" when he says, "Now ill never get to play". With no clear signs of him slowing down, Tom Brady does have this chance to keep chugging like the energizer bunny, if he could throw a deep out.

But Father Time is a factor that is always in play. See the NFL's most recent victim in Peyton Manning. Does this seemingly sliver of hope convince Jimmy to stay? I am not sure. Also, as a teammate I can't say that he would wish any ill-will or quick demise to Tom Brady, but you just can't blame the kid for wanting to play. In the two weeks we were able to watch, before bowing out early in the Miami game due to a shoulder injury, he amassed 496 yards on 60 attempts, with 4 touchdowns included in this span. While a small sample size, this still proved enough to be better than a lot of free agent options this year, and still poses a hot button topic as the draft nears.

A fear that I am not sure has been discussed is that also while signing on for this year, nothing is locked in for the oncoming years for coach and current offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. After a somewhat dismal performance as a head coach in Denver, McDaniels then retuned to his former role of offensive coordinator, one year with the then St. Louis Rams, then shipping back to New England as OC where he has been since. My fear is that since McDaniels is not locked in with the Patriots and already testing the market of teams looking for a new head coach this offseason, that Jimmy G will follow him. Already showing success under the system that McDaniels runs, it seems like a natural fit. While the allegiance to the organization seems strong, I see this as a potential mishap. Thus forcing New England's hand in either franchise tagging Garoppolo, or conforming to the monetary demands that the quarterback wishes. I don't see the Patriots or Belichick allowing Jimmy to walk under these circumstances whatsoever, but McDaniel's definitely has the potential to leave next year. A potential trap is something that could and should have New England fans scared.

Fireworks on what has come to be a blockbuster name in Jimmy Garoppolo loom. Do the Patriots keep Jimmy as a backup plan, does a potential buyer in a team like the Browns offer up a deal the Patriots can't refuse, does Bill tango with father time, do they even throw the tag on him come next winter? There are very few certainties in this situation, but if Tom has it his way, number 12 will be around for another half-decade at least, and Jimmy G will get his fair share of the spoils one way or the other.
