Sox take Opening Day Game

We are one game in, and the Red Sox are on pace to go 162-0, which has never been accomplished before. Not only that, but the Sox are already a game up on the Yankees. While I try to get my shitty puns out of the way, I do think the Sox came out with a glimpse of the potential fire power this offense can bring. With a final score of 5-3, the Sox were powered by their 5 Run 5th inning. Just hinting at the possibilities of this team to break games open all season long. We saw solid collective efforts from a once afterthought in Pablo Sandoval, and a poke to right field from Andrew Benintendi. And if that wasn't enough to get the people going, we were even getting some great pieces of hitting from Sandy Leon. Going 2-3 with a run scored. Pretty Ricky (Porcello) picked up right where he left off last year and threw a 6 hit game, with 5 K's.

What I guess was difficult already getting used to was not seeing Big Papi in the lineup. On Twitter, he left a heartfelt message to the fans and the organization, wishing them well on Opening Day at Fenway, and it cut deep. As a sports hero to many in this town, and a fan favorite, it was different to say the least. The interesting part about my young life is that I have had some important Boston figures in Tom Brady, David Ortiz, and Paul Pierce around for basically entire fandom. So to see one either retired (Papi) or one not in a Boston uniform and on the cusp of retirement (Pierce) it is something that sticks and resonates. While I still am not convinced that Papi won't comeback mid-season, it was a bittersweet day for the younger Red Sox fan in me.

Nonetheless, the Red Sox and Porcello get the win on opening day. Excited about a new season with Boston's summer team, and hope the Sox can make a deeper run in the playoffs then last year (sheesh). The Sox return to action in game 2 of their three day home stand against the Pittsburg Pirates. Chris Sale gets the nod for Wednesday's game, and all of Boston is eager to see what the newcomer can bring (which, if you can trust stats, is a lot).

I won't be doing this blog on a game to game basis, but feel that it is important to keep everyone in the loop. Buuuuuuuut...the Sox are 1-0. DIRTY WATER BABY. Win. Dance. Repeat.
